Audrey Lucille Lindberg was born July 30, 1919 in Deuel County SD to Louie and Esther (Strassburg) Prehn. She was born raised on a farm southwest of Clear Lake, SD, where her grandparents, John and Esta Prehn, homesteaded in 1873. She was raised along with her brother, Kenneth and her brother, Vernon, who died at age three. Audrey attended grade school at Norman country school near their farm. She was baptized and confirmed at the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt, SD. Audrey then attended Clear Lake High School and graduated in 1937. She worked as a nurses aide at the Cora Johnson Hospital in Clear Lake and then moved to Minneapolis in 1943. There she worked as a bookkeeper at
Munsingwear where they made hammocks and army clothes, followed by seven years as a bookkeeper for Neil Hubbard Heating in St. Paul, MN. Audrey was united in marriage to Raymond Eugene Lindberg originally from Strandburg, SD on June 28, 1947 at her parent’s farm. Audrey and Ray lived in Minneapolis until 1950 when they moved back to Clear Lake because Audrey’s mother was ill and Ray’s job at North Star Woolen Mills terminated when his company moved to Ohio. Audrey’s mother Esther passed away in February 1950.

Carol Louise was born in Minneapolis on January 13, 1949. Kay Lavonne was born in Clear Lake on December 30, 1950. Daughter Ardith Rae was stillborn on January 1, 1952. That summer, Ray came down with Polio and was in an iron lung at Sister Kenny Hospital in the cities. He passed away July 8, 1952 and Kenny and Audrey brought him home by train. After that, Audrey’s father lived with Audrey, Carol, and Kay until he passed away in July of 1954. Ray was a carpenter and helped build the house in Clear Lake where Audrey resided until 1997 when she moved to Sunchase apartment complex in Brookings, SD. Audrey entered the Brookings Brookview Manor nursing home in September 2010 and then entered the Neighborhoods at Brookview nursing home in October 2013 where she resided until her death there on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at the age of 100 years and 9 days.

Audrey was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Clear Lake and for many years, was active in Ladies Aid, Circle and taught preschool Sunday School. Audrey was a fifty-year member of the Clear Lake Extension Club and of multiple Bridge, Whist and Pinochle Clubs within the Clear Lake and Brookings communities. Audrey worked for seven years at the Selective Service Office in Clear Lake after her daughters were in high school and then for several years in the records office doing bookkeeping for Clear Lake Memorial Hospital. In her earlier years, Audrey enjoyed dancing, going to Ray’s baseball games, cooking, canning and baking, helping her girls with 4-H and Girl Scout activities, attending all of Carol and Kay’s school and church programs, taking part in her brother’s children's lives, taking pictures on slides, hosting family picnics and sharing meals with family and friends. Audrey enjoyed doing ceramics, being on a bowling league and cutting newspaper clippings from Deuel County and putting them in scrapbooks. She liked driving her car, taking her friends and relative places, visiting at their homes and hosting and going to family reunions. Two of her aunts stayed with Audrey numerous times. An uncle also stayed at her house while recuperating from surgery. She liked being around people and welcomed company. In later years, Audrey enjoyed playing Bingo, going to music events, listening to old time music and visits from her family and friends.

Audrey especially loved her children and grandchildren and with them made many happy memories including family vacations and mini day trips. Grandma was a very influential part in their lives. Audrey was also blessed to see her great-grandchildren grow and greatly enjoyed their many visits. Audrey loved the Lord, was a strong, patient and kind person with a beautiful smile, who found great joy in taking time for others. She was blessed and thankful to have a long and good life.

Grateful for having shared Audrey’s life are her two daughters: Carol (Richard) Overby of Brookings, SD and Kay Scott of Sioux Falls, SD; four grandchildren: Gary Scott of Sioux Falls, SD, Brett (Rosie) Scott of Ethan, SD, Ryan (Ann) Overby of Brookings, SD and Robyn (Andrew) DenBoer of Rock Valley, IA; four great-grandchildren: Tristan Scott and Sophie Scott of Ethan, SD and Alaina and Aleah Overby of Brookings, SD; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
