Obituary for Dean James Behnke

Dean Behnke, age 82, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Canby, MN. Burial will be in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Canby, MN. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 with 7:00 p.m. prayer service and Rosary to follow at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the Church.

Dean James Behnke was born February 20, 1937 in Limestone township, Lincoln County near Ivanhoe, MN to Joseph and Esther (Vandenberghe) Behnke. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe, MN. Dean graduated in 1955 from Ivanhoe High School in Ivanhoe, MN. He worked at Marshall Produce, Western Dairy of Clarkfield, MN and AMPI based out of New Ulm, MN. Dean retired from AMPI in 2002 after 33 ½ years of service as Field Supervisor.

Dean was married to Dolores “Lori” Adams in 1957. To this union four children were born: Deanne, Dawn, Darcy and Duane. Lori passed away in 1984, following a short battle with cancer. Dean married Paulette “Pauly” Ufkin on October 26, 1985 at St. Peter’s Catholic church in Canby, MN. Pauly passed away unexpectedly in December of 2009.

Church was a very important part of his life and he was interested in all of the community churches and their events as well as his own. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and member of SD Fieldman Assn (President two different times).

He enjoyed spending time with family (especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren) where he attended many games and was proud of his CHS Fan of the Year award in 1990. He was a State champion cribbage player with Mike Miller, Dorance Reynolds, and Kermit Ferguson and was the Handi-cap Champion at the Canby Golf Club in 1976. Dean enjoyed playing cards, games (especially Shut the Box), golfing, hunting, and reading. He also loved to hunt deer and geese and went hunting for bear and moose; he enjoyed hunting trips around home and even out to Montana. His CB name was “blue goose”.

Dean is survived by children: Deanne (Steven) Benson of Canby, MN, Dawn (Lyndon) Giese of Canby, MN, Duane (Rebecca) Behnke of Canby, MN; grandchildren: Thalia (Corey) Rothrock, Carrie (Paul) Thelen, Sara (Nic) Wollum, Beth Beiningen, Michael (Maggie) Giese, Amanda (Nathan) Anderson, Shelby (Kendall) Behnke, Rylan Behnke, Keigan Behnke, Danica Behnke and Gavin Benz; great-grandchildren: Anthony, Rachel and Lillie Wollum, Ryah Beiningen, Riece and Reghan Sanow, Blake, Brennan, Kyra and Allyson Giese, Gavin and Alexa Thelen, Nolan Anderson, Beckett, Broderick and Elyce Rothrock and Nora Bliss; sister, Margie Lasnetski; and many nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Joseph; first wife, Lori; wife, Pauly; daughter, Darcy; sister and brother-in-law, Leona and James VanMaldeghem; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Mary Behnke; and brother-in-law, Leonard Lasnetski.
