Esther Wayland, age 105, of Ivanhoe, MN passed away on Friday, September 20, 2019 at the Divine Providence Nursing Home in Ivanhoe. Memorial service will be 11:00am on Friday, September 27th at the Bethany-Elim Lutheran Church in Ivanhoe. Visitation will be 4 to 7pm on Thursday, September 26th at the Houseman Visitation Center in Ivanhoe with a prayer service at 6:30pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior the service at the church. Esther Arnelda (Olson) Wayland was born on September 11, 1914 on her family’s farm in Hansonville Township, Lincoln County, to Ames Olson and Ella (Knutson) Olson. She graduated from Hendricks High School in 1933 and then went on to graduate from Mankato State University.

On September 13, 1943 Esther married Lyell Woodrow Wayland in the Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. After their marriage they remained in the Twin Cities to aid the war effort by helping to produce planes for Northwest Airlines.

After the war, Esther and Lyell returned to Ivanhoe where they built a house and raised their daughter, Margo.

The first nine years of Esther’s thirty four-year career in education were spent in a one-room country schoolhouse, where she taught first through eighth grades. The remainder of her career was spent with Ivanhoe Public School, where she taught fourth and sixth grades to multiple generations of Ivanhoe children.

Esther was a member of Bethany-Elim Lutheran Church, was active in WELCA and the DPHC Auxiliary and was a member of two pinochle clubs. She loved life and teaching. She also enjoyed nurturing her flower garden, spending time with family and friends, traveling, listening to Big Band music and in her youth – dancing!

She is survived by her daughter, Margo (Wayland) Neilson and her son-in-law, Brian Neilson of San Francisco; her granddaughter, Chloe Francesca Neilson of San Francisco; and many dear nieces and nephews and their families.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ames and Ella; her siblings: Kenneth Olson, Alice Graff, Grace Stetzler, Ernest Olson and Gladys Watts; and her husband Lyell.

We celebrate the memory of her extraordinary life.
