Obituary for Gerald "Jerry" J. Thompson

Gerald “Jerry” Thompson, age 89, of Canby, MN, passed away on Friday, September 27, 2019 at the Sylvan Court Nursing Home in Canby. Memorial service will be 1:00pm on Wednesday, October 2nd at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Canby. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be at the Canby City Cemetery. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.

Gerald Jacob Thompson was born October 2, 1929 in Canby, MN to parents A. Ludvig and Velma (Fisher) Thompson. He was baptized and confirmed at Providence Valley Lutheran Church. He attended rural school in Providence Township and Madison High School. Then went on to Morris Agricultural school. Jerry served his country in the United States Army. He served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and of that span of time 15 months were spent in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1953.

On February 21, 1954 Jerry was united in marriage to Charlotte Erickson at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Canby. To this union they were blessed with their daughter, Brenda in 1957. Gerald farmed in Providence township until 1955 when he was then employed by Madison Utilities. Then he and Charlotte moved to Canby where he was employed by Otter Tail Power Company for over 20 years. Jerry also worked for the Canby Hospital and the First Presbyterian Church.

Jerry enjoyed fishing, reading, sports, playing cards and traveling. Also, spending over 20 years in their travel trailer at a lake where they spent time visiting with family and friends which very important to him.

He was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, Life member of Canby V.F.W. and Military Order of the Cooties, Porter American Legion and the Military Honor Guard.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte Thompson of Canby; his brother, Roland (Karen) Thompson of Coon Rapids, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Brenda in 1976; and his brother William.
