Obituary for Gerry E. Koenecke

Geraldine Koenecke, age 97, of Clear Lake, SD passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at the Deuel County Good Samaritan Society in Clear Lake. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, SD. Burial to follow at the Lakeview Cemetery in Clear Lake. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the Church on Wednesday. The Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake is entrusted with the arrangements.

Geraldine “Gerry” Elaine Koenecke was born to Louis and Laura (Bogenrief) Lavin on December 30, 1921 in Clear Lake, South Dakota. She attended 12 years of school in Clear Lake, graduating Clear Lake High School in 1939. She worked for Central Telephone and then Davey Telephone as a switch board operator. In later years she worked for Sodak Gardens.

In 1940 she married Melvin Koenecke, they lived in Sioux City, Iowa in 1940 and 41, then moved back to Clear Lake where Mel worked for the United States Post Office in Clear Lake until his death in 1978. They had three children: Sharon, David and Todd.

She was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ where she held many offices in the church and in the Congregational Women’s Fellowship and Sunday School. She was a member of Ruth Chapter #50, order of the Eastern Star and held many offices including WorthyMatron. Gerry was active in the Clear Lake Museum and Historical Society for many years including chairman of the board. She was active in Boy Scouts and was also a 4-H leader for many years and was active in her extension club for many years. She received the Community Service Award in 1987 and belonged to the Red Hatters. She was one of three co-editors of the Clear Lake History book 1884-1984, entitled “A Precious Legacy”. She loved to play bridge and played in two bridge clubs.

Gerry is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Loren) Wiesner, Ft. Collins, Co; her son, Todd (Rita) Koenecke, Pierre, SD; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Koenecke, Clear Lake, SD; one sister, LaFoy Tesch, Brookings, SD; one brother, Dal Lavin, Clear Lake, SD; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mel; one brother, Lyle “Jack” Lavin; one son, David Koenecke; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Tesch and Marvin Lebert; and one great-granddaughter, Calley Gamrath.
