Obituary for Lester G. Bockes

Lester G. Bockes, age 93, of Watertown, SD formerly of Canby, MN passed away Monday, April 29, 2019 in the Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. Memorial service will be 2 pm Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Canby with Rev. Levi Bollerud officiating. Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.

Lester Gerald Bockes was born January 27, 1926 to Oscar J. and Edith J. (Lenander) Bockes in Flandreau, South Dakota. He was baptized in the Wood Lake Lutheran Church, rural Astoria and confirmed at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church on May 11, 1941. Lester graduated from Canby High School in 1944. Following high school he enlisted into the United States Navy where he served during WWII. Lester was honorably discharged on May 9, 1946 and returned to Canby.

Lester was united in marriage to Norma P. Thompson on April 10, 1950. To this union three daughters were born: Lonnie, Jerilyn and Holly. Lester worked various jobs in the Canby area throughout his career.

On June 24, 1995, he was united in marriage to Barbara (Redepenning) Thompson in Ortonville, MN. The couple lived one year in Canby before moving to Ortonville where they lived for 18 years. They moved to Dawson, MN and then in December of 2017 moved to Watertown, SD. Lester entered the Jenkins Living Center on April 13, 2019 where he passed away on Monday, April 29, 2019 at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 2 days.

While in Canby, Lester was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where he sang in the church choir for many years. He was a member of the Marietta Legion and the Canby VFW. Lester had a passion for music, especially singing in many quartets, including the Gay Nineties Quartet, throughout his life. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing pinochle and was an avid sports fan including the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara (Thompson) Bockes, Watertown, SD; three daughters: Jeri (Jerry) Munsterman, Lonnie (Lonnie) Leasman and Holly Bockes; two step-daughters, Loretta (Lee) Anderson and Georgia (Dennis) Holt; grandchildren: Staci (Kevin) Smith, Calli Munsterman, Zachary Munsterman, Lori (Mark) Strelow, Teri (J) Doehring and Kristi (Curtis) Terry; great-grandchildren: William Hengen, Logan McNeil, Mason McNeil, Jadyn McNeil, Drake, Zane and Cooper Doehring, Jacob and Jaxon Terry and baby girl Smith, due June 30th; one great-great-grandchild, Blakely McNeil; step-great-grandchildren: Dawson Strelow, Kaitlyn Strelow; Amaiya Terry, Jackson Smith; 5 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Liz (Ivan) Dorn and Doreen Benson; Brother-in-law, Charles Pearson; and many Cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lester is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Bonnie Pearson; and brother-in-law, Verle Benson.
