Obituary for Melvin E. Engelbrecht

Melvin Emil Engelbrecht, age 87, of Clear Lake, SD went to be with the Lord on July 11, 2019 at the Sanford Clear Lake Medical Center. Visitation will be held Monday, July 15, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD with a funeral procession following to the Lakeview Cemetery, Clear Lake for a committal service. The family extends an invitation to join them for lunch and fellowship at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clear Lake following the committal service.

Melvin was born on July 15, 1931 to Max and Emma (Johnson) Engelbrecht at their home near Goodwin, South Dakota. He lived at home and farmed with his parents until the age of 24 years when he married Joyce Shaver in 1955. They had two daughters, Cathy and Carla.
Melvin worked for the Deuel County Highway department for five years until 1960 when he started working at the Deuel County Telephone Company. He retired from the Deuel Telephone Company, now ITC in 1991 after 31 years of service. Melvin had a dirt construction company for 32 years, owning his own equipment consisting of a motor grader, loader and a scraper. This was his passion until his retirement from construction work in 2000. He had a country western band for five years called the Country Kings, performing as lead singer and guitar.

He married Eileen Crerar in 1976. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all who knew him. He was active in the community during his earlier years, serving on the Fire Department, the Kiwanis Club, the Snowmobile Club and Flying Club.

Melvin enjoyed working with machines of all sizes whether moving dirt or cutting grass,
country western music, and watching old western movies. He always had a smile, laugh and twinkle in his eyes as he teased everyone. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and kindness.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Eileen (Crerar) Engelbrecht; two daughters: Cathy (Craig) Burd and Carla (Ken) Hashimoto; three granddaughters: Kelsi Burd, Andrea Hashimoto and Christina Hashimoto; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Emma Engelbrecht; his first wife Joyce (Shaver) Engelbrecht; two sisters: Gladys Lammers and Avis Davison; and two brothers-in-law, Dale Lammers and Bruce Davison.
