Obituary for Norma Jean Houtkooper

Norma Houtkooper, age 87, of Canby, MN passed away on Sunday, April 21, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 26, 2019 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Canby, MN. Burial will be at the Highland Lutheran Cemetery, Brandt, SD. Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Prayer Service on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby, MN.

Norma Jean Houtkooper was born in Deuel County South Dakota on November 1, 1931 to Haakon and Nora (Bjerke) Jacobson. After graduating from Clear Lake High School, she went on to attend the Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis, MN.

On June 20, 1953, she married Donald Houtkooper at the Highland Church in Brandt, SD. They made their home in Canby, where she worked at the Canby Medical Clinic for over 40 years as a medical and x-ray technologist. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the women’s group. Norma also belonged to the Sons of Norway in Canby.

They were blessed with two children, Neil and Gail. Norma loved to attend their various school activities and help them with their school projects. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, hardanger and crocheting.

Throughout the years, she enjoyed camping trips with family and friends. Once retired, she took many bus trips with Don and they spent several winters in Texas. In 2018, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where she remained until her death.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Sioux Falls, SD; her son, Neil (Pam) Houtkooper and their daughters, Madeline and Miranda (Ben) Bunyan; her daughter, Gail Anderson and her sons, Zachary (Afton) Anderson, Jacob Anderson and Alex (Kristin) Anderson; brother, Erling (Lois) Jacobson; and several nieces and nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; infant brother, Howard; brother, Harold (Eva) Jacobson; granddaughter, Mara Houtkooper; and son-in-law, Dennis Anderson.
