Vernice Engelstad, age 94, of Hendricks, MN, passed away on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the Hendricks Nursing Home. Funeral service will be at 11:00am on Saturday, September 14th at the Singsaas Church, rural Hendricks. Visitation will be held 5 to 7pm on Friday, September 13th at the Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Hendricks with a 7pm prayer service. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Singsaas Cemetery, Hendricks. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.

Vernice Fredricka (Peterson) Engelstad was born May 6, 1925 in Trade Lake Wisconsin to Raymond and Agnes Peterson, the fourth of six children. She attended grade school at a country school and graduated from high school at Frederic, Wisconsin in 1943. She attended the Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing through the University of Minnesota cadet program and graduated in 1947. She enjoyed traveling a lot in her 1948 Ford Deluxe that she ordered out of a magazine. Some memorable adventures she had with friends included driving through the Redwoods, in downtown Manhattan, putting her car on the ferry in Vancouver and her summer spent in Yellowstone.

Some interesting parts of her nursing career were working at the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona and in Minneapolis for five years where she was the head nurse of the pediatric department at the University of Minnesota during the polio epidemic. She also worked in the Hendricks Hospital and Nursing Home.

She met the love of her life Luther Engelstad and they married on June 25, 1955. They moved to the “home place” near Astoria, South Dakota where they farmed and built their life together. She adapted quickly to life on the farm and enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, playing games and bringing lunch to her favorite farmers. Her family and friends were very important to her and she treasured time spent with them. She had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of the Singsaas Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide. She especially enjoyed making quilts to donate to the Union Gospel Mission. When Luther had to go to the Nursing Home in 2002 she moved to Hendricks to be closer to him. She enjoyed her time living in town, volunteering and helping others.

She went home to be with Jesus on September 8, 2019 while a resident at the Hendricks Nursing Home. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Luther at the Singsaas Cemetery.
She will be greatly missed by her three boys Donald (Sheila) of Hendricks Minnesota, Duane (Char) of Fairfield Idaho, Ralph (Noreen) of Astoria South Dakota; 9 grandchildren, Karissa (Austin), Heather (Thomas), Garret (Taryn), Bart (Jamie), Bethany (Nathan), Kari (Tyler), Brandon (Ashley), Stephanie (David) and Ben (Katelyn); and 12 great-grandchildren.

Vernice was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Raynes, Roseil, Kenneth, Clarence and Lyle and one great-granddaughter.
